“Aicha”: An Unexpected Encounter Between Moroccan Gnawa and New York Electronic Music
Some collaborations emerge where you least expect them. Aicha is the result of an unexpected meeting, made possible by social media, between Jaouad El Garouge, a custodian of the Moroccan Gnawa tradition, and Afton Grant (aka Another Time), an electronic music producer based in New York.
What began as a simple virtual exchange evolved into a true musical journey. Aicha is rooted in the depth of Gnawa, featuring the hypnotic sounds of the guembri and the ancestral chants of the traditional repertoire.
On his part, Another Time unfolds powerful electronic textures and a modern, minimalist architecture that allows the voice and the guembri to breathe. The electronic elements thus become a natural extension of the tradition, enhancing the emotion without overpowering it.
Both danceable and nostalgic, and truly original, Aicha defies the clichés of fusion. The piece creates a subtle dialogue between heritage and modernity, between ancestral memory and contemporary urban sensibility.
More than just a track, Aicha tells a human and contemporary story: that of two artists brought together by digital chance, guided by mutual listening and curiosity. It’s a beautiful testament that social media can indeed be a space for genuine creative encounters.
With Aicha, Jaouad El Garouge and Another Time craft a free and vibrant piece, where dance becomes inward and tradition, a universal language.
Aicha is available now, everywhere you listen to music.
